With Truman’s appearance at the Hy-Vee Shootout on the line, Rebecca Jonas going to let the Patriots slide.
Jonas, the Patriots 6-2 center, exploded for eight points during a 10-2 Patriots run in the third quarter, to lead Truman to a 46-38 victory over Bishop Miege on Thursday afternoon. Jonas finished with 21 points and seven rebounds to lead Truman (7-0).
With the score knotted at 24-24 with 3:55 left in the third quarter, Jonas went to work. A bucket on the right block, then an offensive stickback put Truman up 28-24 with 2:48 left. After a pair of Miege free throws, Ashley Guenther hit a turnaround shot to keep the margin at four, 30-26.
Then Jonas canned a 10-footer with 24 ticks left in the period for a 32-26 edge. Jonas picked up in the fourth, immediately dropping in a bucket off the left block on an entry pass from Kayla Harrell for a 34-26 gap.
Bishop Miege, which entered the game at 3-0 and No. 8, closed the margin to 36-32 with 4:17 left after consecutive hoops from Iland Shurn. But Jonas converted inside and Abby Hix followed with four straight free throws to build up a 10-point cushion with 2:27 left. Hix finished with 14 points in the contest.
