Louisburg doubled down on big play calls, and hit jackpot at Tonganoxie on Friday night.
In a battle of two of Kansas top 10 Class 4A teams, Louisburg stayed undefeated with a thrilling 30-29 win at Tongie.
The Wildcats (6-0) trailed 29-23 late in the fourth quarter, and faced a second-and-26 from its own 41-yard line. But quarterback Declan Battle dropped back and bombed to Caden Caplinger, who hauled in the pass at the THS 30 and skated down the sideline for a 59-yard touchdown to trail, 29-28 with 5:39 left.
Louisburg opted to go for two, and Battle rolled to the right, then fired left to a wide open Conlee Hovey for the 30-29 margin. Tongie drove to the LHS 32, but facing fourth down, a Trevor McGraw pass sailed long, and the Wildcats ran out the clock.
The game started out with Louisburg scoring on its first two drives for an early 14-0 lead. However, the Chieftains fired back as senior running back Colton Brusven broke off a 72-yard TD run to make it 14-7. The teams would trade scores going into halftime for a 22-15 Louisburg lead.
Tonganoxie (4-2) cranked up in the third quarter, as Trevor McGraw connected with Todd Brown and Owen Schmidt for big plays to set up a pair of Brusven scores to put the Chieftains on top, 29-22, early in the 4th quarter.
Louisburg looks to stay atop the Frontier League when hosting Ottawa (3-3), while Tongie hosts Eudora (3-3).
It wasn't a high-scoring thriller as usual, but Bishop Miege won't complain.
The Stags halted rival St. Thomas Aquinas, 19-7, on Friday night to stay atop the Eastern Kansas League and improve to 5-1 overall. The two teams split games last year by scores of 29-26 (Aquinas) and 38-28 (Miege).
Bishop Miege, No. 7 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, got on the board early after blocking a Saints punt on the opening possession, starting at the Aquinas 13. Five plays later, quarterback Marco Rodriguez hit wideout Teryn Jackson for a two-yard touchdown pass, and an early 7-0 lead.
Aquinas (4-2) couldn't must much on offense for most the game with its two leading rushers - Gianni Rizzi and Calin Arndt - out with injuries. Miege held the Saints scoreless for a 10-0 lead.
The Saints tried mightily, as a Miege drive to open the second half got to the STA 3, but on fourth down, Dillon Marshall batted down a pass to halt the threat.
Aquinas started to drive out, but Aiden Skinner's quasi pass attempt was ruled a fumble. The Stags took over at the Aquinas 23, but the Stags were held to just a field goal and a 13-0 lead.
Miege sealed the game when Jack Baird picked off Skinner for a 33-yard touchdown return and a 19-0 lead. St. Thomas Aquinas later scored on a Blake O'Brien rushing touchdown, but Miege eventually ran out the clock.
Rodriguez finished with 155 passing yards, while Jackson hauled in 12 passes for 86 yards.
Bishop Miege will host Blue Valley West (3-3) next week, while St. Thomas Aquinas plays at Blue Valley (3-3) next Friday.
After a snoozefest, Lansing and Basehor-Linwood broke out the fireworks late.
Lansing broke a 13-13 tie with 7:50 left on a one-yard touchdown plunge by quarterback Dalton Jorgensen for a 19-13 lead.
Basehor-Linwood turned to the passing game and drove down field, as a 31-yard pass from Brady VanDonge to Brody Torkelson helped set the Bobcats at the LHS 26. After picking up a 4th-and-3, VanDonge hit Torkelson again in the middle of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown strike, and a 20-19 lead with 5:02 left.
Lansing (2-4) came right back with a 35-yard bomb from Jorgenson to Lexton Grafke to put LHS at the BL 9. But perhaps Lansing scored too quickly, as two plays later, Caden Howell scored his second touchdown of the game from three yards out for a 25-20 lead at 3:11 left. Lansing failed for the second straight two-point conversion attempt.
Basehor drove quickly to midfield before facing a third-and-nine with 1:33 left. A VanDonge 20-yard pass to Kaleb Scott put BLHS at the Lansing 40. Yet another third-and-nine with 39 seconds left, VanDonge fired for a 17-yard strike to Nate Martin. On the next play, VanDonge lobbed a ball to the back right corner to Martin again, who hauled in the pass with 22 ticks left for the game-winning touchdown.
Basehor-Linwood (4-2) will entertain Seaman (3-3) next Friday, while Lansing (3-3) takes on defending Class 6A state champion Manhattan (5-1).
